EU urges action on eggs crisis, not blame game

Eggs contaminated with an insecticide called Fipronil have been discovered in Europe, with millions being pulled from supermarket shelves.

The UK government says 700,000 tainted eggs have been distributed in the country's processed foods. That number is up from a previously estimated 21,000. But authorities are playing down the risk, saying it represents a small portion of eggs in processed foods.

Elsewhere, Belgium is facing criticism for knowing about the problem in June but not notifying the European Commission until late July.

An EU Commission spokesperson says the focus should be on action, not blame, adding that it is ready and willing to discuss ways to improve the effectiveness of the European Union's system.
