Bangladesh all-rounder Nasir Hossain will need to undergo an operation for tearing his right knee ligament after allegedly sustaining an injury while playing football. He is expected to be out of cricket for around six months.

"Primary assessment showed that he has a badly injured ligament on his right knee. To know more we had sent him for an MRI [yesterday] and it shows he had torn his ligaments and will require an operation," Debashish Chowdhury, BCB's chief physician, said on Tuesday.

"We are yet to decide whether it will be completed at home or abroad. But as it stands, he will certainly be out of cricket for the next six months," he added.

The unexpected turn of events forced the right-handed batsman to miss the chance of staking a strong claim in the national team's set-up by putting up noteworthy performances during the upcoming home series between Bangladesh 'A' and Sri Lanka, where he was looked at as one of the front-runners to lead the side.

Nasir's injury seemed to have been kept in the dark from the national think-tank as they were left wondering as to how Nasir could pick up such a serious injury when there was no cricket and practice scheduled for him. The allegation of sustaining the injury while playing football clearly became a subject of discussion in the cricket arena where it is looked down upon.

"Every cricketer should have a clear knowledge regarding his priorities," Habibul Bashar, the national selector, told reporters when his attention was drawn towards the allegation of Nasir picking up the injury while playing football.

"Certainly it will make him pay as he will surely lose few opportunities that seemed to be lying ahead for him to grab," he added.

However, Nasir had shrugged off all the rumours regarding his injury status and looked dejected for hogging the national headline for all the wrong reasons.

"It is quite disappointing to see what is happening with me," Nasir told Cricbuzz on Tuesday in an attempt to clear the rumours. "I had twisted my knee while running during a personal visit outside Dhaka but there is no truth whatsoever regarding the allegation that it was sustained while playing football.

"I did not anticipate that my injury will be projected in this manner by the media and it is simply hurtful, to say the least," he added.

Nasir, known as the finisher in his prime days, remained subdued for most part of the Dhaka Premier League before showing some sort of indication of returning to form, and this unexpected mishap seemed to have really shocked him.

"Since completing the century in the last game of the league, my focus clearly returned on my own game as that innings helped me to regain the confidence that was lacking for not being able to contribute as per my expectation.

"I knew that there are some opportunities coming up for me to prove my worth and make a claim for a permanent place in the national dressing room," he added.
