At least six Cambodian migrant workers were killed and 13 others injured after a truck carrying them crashed into a tree in the Chachoengsao province of Thailand on Saturday night, Cambodian Foreign Ministry's spokesman Koy Kuong confirmed Sunday.
"Five women and one man were killed on the spot and 13 others injured when the truck hit a tree and overturned due to drowsy driving," he said, adding that a Thai driver was also killed in the accident.
The official said the workers were traveling to Cambodian border in fear for their safety after Thailand's new military government has arrested and repatriated more than 100,000 Cambodian migrant workers, mostly illegal migrant workers, to Cambodia since early this month.
He said as of Sunday, the Thai authorities has continued expelling Cambodian migrant workers.
Cambodian Minister of Labor Ith Samheng said Friday that more than 200,000 Cambodian laborers, including 80,000 legal migrant workers, have been working in Thailand.
The massive deportation came just weeks after Thailand's army, which seized control of the government in a coup on May 22, forced factories and enterprises to stop using illegal foreign workers.
