Tornadoes kill over 30 in southern U.S.

A tornado outbreak tearing across southern U.S. states on Sunday and Monday has killed more than 30 people, authorities have said.

There were dozens of reports of tornadoes after the storms hit states of Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South and North Carolinas, and Tennessee.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said Monday that at least 11 people had been killed there, while the death toll in South Carolina was nine and that of Georgia was seven.

Besides, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas reported at least one fatality.

More than 1 million homes and businesses lost power as a result of the outbreak, according to poweroutage.us.

The storms also caused injuries, destroyed homes, toppled trees, and closed roads.
