Indian minister enters parliamentary race in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Indian Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah Monday filed his nomination papers from Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Abdullah, president of ruling National Conference is seeking re- election from Srinagar parliamentary constituency.

"Farooq Abdullah today submitted his nomination papers in the deputy commissioner's office here for contesting upcoming India's general elections," a senior government official said.

Abdullah was accompanied by his son, the region's Chief Minister Omar Abdullah besides local Congress party Chief Saifuddin Soz.

Indian Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has filed nomination papers from region's Udhampur-Doda constituency on Congress Party' s ticket.

The congress party and National Conference have entered into a pre-poll alliance in Indian-controlled Kashmir and divided region' s six seats. Each party has decided to field its candidates on three seats only and decided to support the other on remaining three.

The alliance has to face candidates from Peoples Democratic Party, right-wing Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) or India's Peoples Party, newly launched anti-corruption party Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) or Common man's party.

Polling for the 16th Indian general elections would be held in five staggered phases in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Officials said 9,633 polling stations would be set up across Indian-controlled Kashmir for voters. These booths would be set up at 7,346 locations and of them 4,059 have been declared critical.

Around 7 million voters, including 3.2 million women, are expected to cast their vote in the restive Indian-controlled Kashmir.

In the upcoming India's general elections, the Congress party is seeking to regain power under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, the fourth generation scion of India's powerful Nehru-Gandhi clan. He would be facing Narendra Modi, the prime ministerial candidate for BJP.
