As e-sports continues to gain momentum in China, the gaming industry has seen an upward trend as well.

“There is almost no rise in the market of consumer PCs in recent years, but the sale of gaming PCs keeps rising,” Jackie Wang, corporate senior vice president of Dell China, told CGTN after a launch event in Beijing, China, on Wednesday.

The event highlighted Dell's new gaming PC series, the G Series, and the majority of the company's new releases are gaming devices.

“People were just testing the water of the gaming industry three years ago, but now it’s clear that the market is huge, we need to invest more in it,” said Wang.

“E-sports are rising rapidly in China,” said Wang, adding that e-sports will officially become one of the events of the Asian Games in 2022 in Hangzhou.

Besides the increasing number of new gamers, more and more young people are joining gaming clubs to play professionally in competitions. Some colleges in China have even started to offer e-sports classes for students.

“The gaming industry will make a great contribution to GDP. It drives not only the hardware industry but also improves the quality of software development,” Wang told CGTN.

What do gamers want?

“Worldwide, every gamer needs performance … and what they really want is quality,” said Joe Olmsted, director of Product Development at Dell, referring to the PC performance requirements from gamers.

However, better performance usually comes with high cost, which can stop consumers from upgrading their gaming devices.

“Gaming PCs are expensive from virtually every vendor, they are not mainstream, they cost more,” said Olmsted.

According to Olmsted, the cost of the CPU-GPU combination is roughly the same for almost every company.

“I think you will see a race to the bottom in some products … but in some points you are sacrificing quality," said Olmsted.

“That’s something that is not gonna build a long brand loyalty, certainly in China."

Can gaming PCs stay mainstream?

Although the history of PC gaming can be traced back to decades ago, it is still mostly about the keyboard and mouse.

“PC gaming is built around the amount of actions that you can do in a minute. Actions require hands, fingers, ears, mouth – because you are usually speaking as well – and your eyes,” said Olmsted.

Olmsted said he doesn't foresee a lot of change in how people play games because they will still use all of those points of interaction. "I don’t see that changing at all,” he added.

“Of course, there will be new technologies that can create more possibilities for the industry, such as 5G technology, that provide faster speeds for gamers," Wang told CGTN.

“But smartphones and PCs are the mainstream gaming devices, and it will stay that way for a long time,” said Wang.
