A hostile spell of bowling by Neil Wagner had New Zealand poised for a substantial victory in the second Test against the West Indies in Hamilton on Tuesday.
The West Indies, having lost the first Test by an innings, were set a world record 444 runs to win the second.
But after resuming day four at 30 for two, they had slumped to 106 for five at lunch and with Sunil Ambris retired hurt.
Roston Chase was not out 32 with Raymon Reifer on nine.
Wagner, whose short-pitched deliveries have troubled the West Indies throughout the series, captured the wickets of Shai Hope and Shane Dowrich and injured Ambris in a withering 10-ball burst.
Hope, on 23, required medical attention after being hit on the forearm by a rising Wagner delivery and when play resumed an ambitious attempt to hook another short ball was caught by Colin de Grandhomme at long leg.
Ambris was on five when he left the field after a painful blow to the wrist.
His replacement Dowrich only faced two balls when he fended a Wagner bouncer to Henry Nicholls at short leg.
Trent Boult started the slide in the sixth over of the day when Kraigg Brathwaite was caught in the gully for 20.
Wagner has two for 27 and Boult two for 38.
