The provincial police chief of southern Afghan province of Helmand escaped unharmed a suicidal car bomb attack, which wounded three policemen, officials said on Monday.

"A militant detonated an explosive-packed car near the convoy of provincial police chief General Mohammad Nabi Elham in provincial capital Lashkar Gah at around 6:30 a.m. local time. The blast killed the attacker on the spot and injured three policemen of the convoy," provincial government spokesman Omar Zawak told Xinhua.

Helmand has been notorious for growing poppy and the Taliban hotbed.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Taliban is most likely behind such attacks.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since the militant group launched annual spring offensive in late April against Afghan government forces and about 100,000 NATO-led troops stationed in the country.
