Samsung Group chief Lee Jae-yong got 5 years in jail, will appeal

The Seoul Central District Court on Friday sentenced Samsung's de facto head Lee Jae-yong to five years in prison on multiple charges related to the corruption scandal that led to the removal of president Park Geun-hye from office, Yonhap News Agency has reported.

A lawyer for Samsung Group leader Jay Y. Lee said on Friday the defense team could not accept a court ruling to jail Lee for five years for bribery and will appeal against the decision.

“We are confident the ruling will be overturned,” lawyer Song Wu-cheol told reporters after the ruling by the Seoul Central District Court.

Lee, who has been in detention since February, has been indicted on multiple charges including bribery and embezzlement.
