Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi Tuesday stressed in her speech to the public that the country can face the challenge of the COVID-19 epidemic by uniting all together in one.

The state counselor urged the public not to be afraid of the rumors and to follow the directives of the Ministry of Health and Sports as well as other related ministries.

The state counselor also called for the responsible cooperation from all returnees and to inform the related health departments daily if there are any symptoms of the disease, adding that the health ministry can give free treatment.

Suu Kyi also pledged that there is no possibility of food shortage, warning panic buying among the community is likely to spread the disease. She said rumors about the lockdown of cities and closure of factories were incorrect as the government has no plan to shut down all shopping malls and markets.

"The disease can be controlled as the World Health Organization (WHO) has already announced about it," she added.

At present, Myanmar reported its first two confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Chin State and Yangon Region so far.
