The Gorontalo Police have named Edi Nurkamiden the sole suspect in a recent riot at Gorontalo Penitentiary; Edi is accused of provoking inmates to attack security personnel and take over the prison.

Police declared Edi's status following questioning by the Gorontalo Police's general crimes directorate over the riot that took place on Tuesday evening, Gorontalo Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Cmr. S. Bagus Santoso said on Friday.

Edi was named a suspect for allegedly inciting the riot in the penitentiary of 700 inmates. He was charged under Article 351 of the Criminal Code on assault, with a maximum seven-year prison sentence.

Police have also questioned several witnesses in the investigation to seek possible further suspects in the assault against police officer Second Brig. Mohammad Kurniawan Noho.

"Based on information from witnesses and the suspect, the assault perpetrators numbered more than one person. As such, investigators will look into inmates indicated to be involved in the case," Bagus told journalists on Friday.

During the questioning, investigators also found out that Edi, a convict in several assault cases, tested positive for consuming drugs, as traces of amphetamine were found in his urine.

The riot on Tuesday eveing started when Edi argued with Kurniawan inside the penitentiary. The argument ended with Edi and 10 other inmates attacking Kurniawan and stabbing him in the leg.

The brawl soon spread across prison, with other inmates attacking security personnel and pushing them outside the perimeter. The riot continued as inmates threw away stones, bottles and arrows at hundreds of police officers besieging the prison.
