Six Germans were killed and 11 others injured when a speeding car plowed into them in northern Italy on Sunday, Italian media reported.

The incident happened at around 1:15 a.m. (0015 GMT) in the small town of Luttach in the South Tyrol region that borders Austria.

Among the 11 wounded, three were seriously injured, Italian news agency ANSA said.

The 28-year-old driver of the vehicle failed a breath test for alcohol and has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, a police spokesman said.

The tourists, all young people, were standing along the roadside in the town, known as Lutago in Italian, close to a coach when the accident happened, the spokesman said.
