**MANILA, May 20 (APD) -- **Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) Administrator Reynaldo Berroya confirmed earlier reports five of the 32 injured passengers and two crew members have remained confined at a government and private hospital facilities as of this morning.
Administrator Berroya, a retired police general, said two Light Rail Transit trains collided late Saturday night in Quezon City which involved a loaded train and an empty train.
Citing initial reports reaching his office. General Berroya said the incident involved an empty runaway train which rolled from its parked position in a pocket tract and rolled towards the west and into an east-bound mainline track. The collision took place at 9:54 P.M., Saturday.
“LRT-2 Operations Control Center (OCC) was notified at 9:51 P.M. of the Runaway Train and instructed the loaded trait that was then running from another station to stop,” Berroya said in a statement sent to this reporter. It was learned the loaded train was able to stop before the empty runaway train collided with it between to passenger terminals.
He added the LRTA has established a fact-finding committee to determine the cause of the incident and a key subject of the investigation will be the cause for the empty train to runaway or roll from its parked position towards the east-bound mainline track.
“We expect a more detailed and complete incident report,” Administrator Berroya said as efforts have been made to minimize the inconvenience to passengers due to the incident.
He said the Light Rail Transit Authority will shoulder all the medical expenses of the injured passengers and crew members.
