Wherever he goes, billionaire businessman
Jack Ma attracts a lot of attention. And his first trip to Africa has
been no different. His first stop was in Kenya, where he praised the
country's communications infrastructure.
Ma arrived on Wednesday and says he came to "share the entrepreneurial spirit and dream."
His
schedule began with a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta and leaders
in the tech industry, followed by a stop at a tech incubator. At a
local university, he urged young people to take advantage of the
technology and data at their disposal.
"Where
is the opportunity? The opportunity lies in the place where people
complain -- if you solve the complaint you got the opportunity. This is
what I believe. ... Most of the projects I have seen here are building
platforms. The difference between building a company and building a
platform is a platform is to enable others, make other people happy,” Ma
said.
Ma say says his giant
company Alibaba will source local partnerships, stressing that only
businesses that create value in people's lives will thrive.
From
Kenya, he'll travel to Rwanda for a UN conference for young
entrepreneurs, where he will be the keynote speaker. He is accompanied
by at least 30 Chinese billionaires looking for new business
opportunities in Africa.
