New Delhi, Feb. 13 (APD) - In a move to clean and decriminalize politics, the Supreme Court of India on Thursday ordered that political parties should disclose criminal cases against the candidates contesting in elections.
The top court also asked for an explanation from the parties on selecting candidates who have criminal cases against them.
The Supreme Court further said that information about pending criminal cases against candidates should be uploaded on social media and party websites as well as published in newspapers.
A report published in the Indian Express stated, “A bench headed by Justice F Nariman said the parties over the selection of such candidates and said the information must be uploaded on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter and in one local vernacular and one national newspaper.”
“The Supreme Court said the parties must submit a report of compliance to the Election Commission within 74 hours of selecting such candidates, failing which the poll panel must inform the apex court,” the report further said.
The order was passed on a contempt plea, which dealt with the issue of criminalization of politics. The court said that the increasing criminalization of politics had become a major problem in the last four general elections.
