A stampede at a soccer stadium in the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa has left at least four people dead and 25 injured, according to Reuters, who cited emergency services officials.

Hundreds of fans hoping to see the match between Motagua and Honduras Progreso tried to force their way into a gate at the 35,000-seat National Stadium, said hospital spokesman Miguel Osorio.

Four adults died and more than a dozen were injured, including children, Osorio said, adding that two people had died at the stadium as the game was getting under way, and two later at the hospital.

Capitan Oscar Triminio of the Honduran firefighter corps said 25 people were injured in the stampede which occurred just before the start of the match.
