Africa's COVID-19 infections reach 2,092,279

The number of COVID-19 infections in Africa reached 2,092,279 on Wednesday as various countries continue to report steady rises in their caseloads.

According to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the continent has also reported 50,296 deaths.

No country in Africa has been hit harder by the pandemic than South Africa. The country has registered 772,252 infections and 21,083 deaths. This accounts for 36.91 percent of the continent's cases and 41.92 percent of its fatalities.

Other than South Africa, the only other African countries that have registered more than 100,000 COVID0-19 infections are Morocco (331,527), Egypt (113,742) and Ethiopia (106,591).

In terms of deaths, ten countries in Africa – South Africa included – have recorded more than 1,000 COVID-19 related fatalities.

The Africa CDC data also shows that the number of patients that have successfully recovered from the disease stood at 1,771,334 by Wednesday afternoon.
