A member of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) urged Tuesday the international community to manifest its solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The remarks were made by Hanan Ashrawi a day before the 40th anniversary of the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) resolution designating Nov. 29 as the international day of solidarity with the Palestinian people, the same day that marks the adoption of UNGA resolution 181, known as the partition resolution that divided historical Palestine into two states in 1947.
"On this significant day in the history of Palestine, we call on the international community to translate solidarity into positive engagement, to put an end to this historical injustice, to bring Israel to full withdrawal, to affect a just solution to the Palestinian refugee issue on the basis of United Nations Resolution 194, and to establish the independent state of Palestine on the 1967 boundaries with East Jerusalem as its capital," she said.
She also called for the states that have not yet recognized Palestine as a state to do so, citing Israeli leverage against the establishment of a viable Palestinian state.
"Israel has generated and institutionalized a culture of racism, extremism, lawlessness and violence," including settlement activity and collective punishment policies against Palestinians, Ashrawi noted.
"Israel's denial of Palestinian independence and freedom will further increase its isolation and delegitimization and cause irreparable damage to the security and stability of the region and beyond," the PLO official added.
