At least 13 people were killed in a fight between rival gangs in a prison in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, state security spokesman Aldo Fasci said Tuesday.

The fight occurred in the Cadereyta prison on Tuesday, beginning with a series of protests early in the day and continuing with an internal fight, where dozens were killed or injured, said the spokesman at a press conference.

The death toll is likely to rise as eight people are seriously injured and the victims have not yet been fully identified by police, said Fasci.

Fasci said that the prison is now guarded by police and order has been restored.

In March of this year, four people were killed and several others injured in a fight in the same prison, according to official reports.
