Sri Lanka boosts security in southern town after mob violence

GALLE, Nov. 18 (APD) – Sri Lanka boosted security in a southern town following mob violence which forced the police to impose a local area curfew.

The Police said the situation in Gintota in the southern Galle town was under control on Saturday following an overnight curfew.

The government meanwhile called for calm and urged the public not to fall prey to attempts to create communal tensions in the area.

Over 100 Police elite commandos and over 200 policemen were deployed to Gintota on Friday evening following mob violence in the area.

The violence involved two groups and the situation escalated with houses and at least one place of worship being attacked.

The Police made several arrests following the incident and imposed a curfew till 9am on Saturday.
