Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani will arrive in Tehran on Saturday for talks with Iranian officials.

Al Thani will hold talks with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif on regional issues, Mousavi tweeted.

The visit by the Qatari minister comes a day after the United States army assassinated a senior Iranian commander in Iraq's capital Baghdad.

The Qatari Foreign Ministry has urged Iran and the United States to exercise self-restraint amid the escalating tensions and avoid "taking Iraq and the region into endless violence."
