Chief Executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Carrie Lam said the newly-passed decision on improving the electoral system of the city is not a setback for Hong Kong's work on democracy.

Talking to reporters at a press conference in Hong Kong after the decision's approval, Lam said the decision fixed loopholes in the existing electoral system which had been exploited by some lawmakers.

The decision was adoptedby China's top legislature, the National People's Congress, on Thursday afternoon as it concluded its annual session, which started on March 5.

Lam earlier issued a statement and voiced strong support for the decision.
