Lebanon's Foreign Ministry received Tuesday a request from the Saudi embassy in Beirut for the repatriation of the body of Majed al-Majed, a leader of an al- Qaida-linked terrorist group who was arrested in Lebanon.

The embassy said in a memorandum that al-Majed's brother requested the repatriation of his corpse in order to bury the leader of terrorist group dubbed Abdullah Azzam Brigades in his home country, Lebanon's official National News Agency reported.

The Foreign Ministry referred the memorandum to the concerned Lebanese authorities "to take the decision they deemed appropriate, " said the report.

On Wednesday, Lebanese caretaker Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn confirmed that the intelligence service of the army has arrested al-Majed, a Saudi born terrorist in Beirut, according to local LBCI TV.

The arrest was made two weeks ago, the report said, noting that al-Majed was one of the most wanted people in Saudi Arabia for terrorism-related charges.

On Saturday, the Lebanese army announced that al-Majed died from illness in army custody in Lebanon. The terrorist suffered from kidney failure and required constant dialysis.

The Abdullah Azzam Brigades claimed responsibility for the deadly twin suicide bombings on Nov. 19 last year against the Iranian embassy in Beirut which killed 25 people. The group was designated by the United States as a "terrorist organization" in 2012.
