Singapore police is investigating into a suspected leak of the personal details of more than 317,000 members of Karaoke entertainment operator K Box, local media reported on Tuesday.
A group calling itself The Knowns emailed links to the list of the members' details to several media outlets on early Tuesday, Channel NewsAsia reported. The information made available on the public website included the names of the K Box members as well as their contact numbers, email addresses, identification card numbers, dates of birth and marital status.
The broadcaster said it has been able to verify the details of several of the members on the list. One of the members affected lodged a police report on the leak on Tuesday afternoon. The police confirmed that they are looking into the matter.
Channel NewsAsia quoted a senior management staff at K Box as saying that the company had "no comment" on the issue.
The Personal Data Protection Commission said it was concerned of the scale of the alleged disclosure of the personal data and has reached out to K Box to investigate.
"Under the Personal Data Protection Act, organizations are required to make reasonable security arrangements to protect personal data in their possession or under their control in order to prevent unauthorized access, collection, use or similar risks," a spokesperson was quoted as saying.
The group claiming responsibility for the leak said that it had done this to show displeasure over a recent increase in toll rate on vehicles traveling across the border. "We had done it before and will do it again," it said. Enditem
