Wu Cheng-tien, the newly elected chairman of Taiwan's New Party who took office Friday, called on the Taiwan authorities to return to the 1992 Consensus and reopen cross-Strait dialogue.

Wu called for efforts to avoid confrontation across the Taiwan Strait.

Pledging to carry on the New Party's principle of seeking justice, harmony and national reunification, Wu said he hopes people across the Strait can set aside bias and misunderstanding, consolidate the profound bond between the two sides and jointly work toward the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

He also urged the Democratic Progressive Party authorities to help bring home the Taiwan residents who have been trapped in Hubei Province due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The New Party has invited Yok Mu-ming, Wu's predecessor, to serve as the party's honorary chairman, Wu said.
