A hostage situation in Reuver, a town in the southern Dutch province of Limburg, ended Thursday with the death of the hostage-taker and his three-year-old daughter, Dutch police said.

Around 9 a.m. local time (0800 GMT), the man was involved in a fight with his ex-wife, who recently ended their relationship. After he shot her in her leg with a machine gun, a neighbor pulled the woman into his house.

The shooter then escaped to another house taking his three-year-old daughter hostage. His ex-wife, who was shot, was brought to the hospital.

Police surrounded the house of the hostage and sealed off the area, while residents were advised to stay indoors. After negotiations with the man, a police team entered the house at around 2.45 p.m (0145 GMT) and found the dead bodies, according to reports.
