Some 20 mines are trapped underground after a mine shaft collapsed in central Zimbabwe, state media report.

The miners are said to have been trapped since Wednesday when they entered for a night shift at a gold mine near Kwekwe city.

AP reports a police spokesman to say at least two bodies have been recovered as rescue efforts continue.

The police don't yet know the exact number of miners in the trapped underground, but state-run Herald newspaper reports that 20 were trapped.

The incident was only discovered after the miners failed to emerge on Thursday morning when their shift was to end.

In the same period last year, 24 people were killed after floods hit tunnels in a mine in the Southern African country. There were fears that the number may have been higher because the unregulated nature of the mining made it difficult to account for everyone.
