(SCMP) AraresolareclipsetookplaceonWednesdaymorningbutHongKongrevellershadtoadmirethespectaclethroughdenseclouds.

TheangleofthephenomenonmeantitwouldhaveonlybeenseenasapartialeclipseinHongKong,butequatorialviewersinIndonesiaandnorthernAustraliaweretreatedtoafulleclipse.

Hongkongerscouldseethesunandmoonalmostlinedupat8.05amatanelevation19degreesabovethehorizon.

Asthemoonpassedby,moreofthesunwasblocked.Themaximumoccurredat8.58am,inwhichathirdofthesun’sdiameterwaseclipsed.

EclipseviewersgatheredwiththeirtelescopesatTsimShaTsuiharbour.Photo:DicksonLeeTheObservatorysaidthepartialeclipsehadamagnitudeof0.331,meaningonly33.1percentofthesun’sdiameterwouldhavebeenobscured.Theforecasterhadrecommendedrevellerstakeupviewingpointswithunobstructedviewstotheeast-southeastsuchasSaiKungandShekO.
