U.S. State Department announced Tuesday that it will designate Amir Muhammad Sa'id Abdal-Rahman al-Mawla, the new head of the Islamic State (IS), as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.
The department said in a statement that following the death of former IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, al-Mawla succeeded him as the leader of the terrorist group.
The designated individual had been active in IS predecessor organization, al-Qaeda in Iraq, and directed global operations of the IS, the statement added.
According to the designation, all of al-Mawla's property and interests in the United States have been blocked and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from engaging in any transactions with him.
The former IS leader al-Baghdadi was killed in a U.S. military operation in Syria last October.
