Cuban grandmaster Dominguez to play at chess World Mind Games

Cuban Grandmaster Leinier Dominguez will participate in the 4th World Mind Games to be held in Beijing from Dec. 11 to 17, 2014, the World Chess Federation (FIDE) said on Thursday.

Dominguez is 13th in the world ranking with 2,755 Elo points. The organizers of the World Mind Games said he reached 7th position in the qualification stage.

The Cuban chess player will face several world stars such as Armenian Levon Aronian (2,804), 2nd in the world ranking.

Other participants include Russians Alexander Grischuk (2,789), Ian Nepomniachtchi (2,710), Azerbaijani Shakriyar Mamedyanov (2,756), French Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (2,768), as well as Chinese Wang Yue (2,713), who last year won the rapid games' stage (20 minutes).

Players from 12 countries took part in the previous edition of the Beijing World Mind Games, which began in 2011, where China finished in first place with nine gold, seven silver and five bronze medals.

Besides chess, World Mind Games include bridge, checkers and xiangqi, a type of Chinese chess.
