Addressing the nation on the eve of the 71st Independence Day, Kovind, said that government’s decision to demonetize was an important decision to end tax evasion.

“New India must be a society rushing towards the future. A compassionate society where the traditionally disadvantaged, are part of our national developmental process,” said Kovind, who belongs to a caste considered low in India.

In the year 2022, the country would complete 75 years of Independence and “it is our national resolve to attain certain desired milestones for a New India by then”, he said.

In his 30-minute speech, Kovind praised the sacrifices of freedom fighters, particularly mentioning Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Bhagat Singh and Rani Lakshmibai.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on the 71st Independence Day after unfurling the flag from the Red Fort amid a 21-gun salute. He paid tributes to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in morning before heading to the Red Fort.

In his speech, he said that India's security is a priority. Talking about technology and development he stressed, “We are nurturing our youngsters to be job creators and not job seekers. Times are changing.

There is a constant change in demand, and a constant change in technology, with these, the nature of jobs are also changing.”

Both prime minister and the president emphasized on the need for a vigorous partnership between the citizen and government, where every individual contributed to nation building.

“The government can frame laws and strengthen law enforcement – but it is for each of us to be a law abiding citizen,” the president said.
