**MANILA, Feb. 2 (APD) ** – Following the announcement a 44-year-old Chinese national’s death due to the 2019-nCOV, Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe said there is a need to further strengthen preparedness and mitigation to prevent the spread of the virus.
In a chance interview after the press conference hosted by Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III, Dr. Abeyasinghe said the World Health Organization (WHO) which he represents in the Philippines would support efforts to expand the testing of persons with flu-like symptoms along with the government’s capacity to manage patients.
“We will support efforts to enhance awareness to prevent the spread of respiratory illness,” he said.
He underscored the fact there is no transmission between and among Filipinos as the fatality traveled from Wuhan to Cebu city in central Philippines last January 21st. He and his lady companion visited Dumaguete City on the 22nd and left for Manila on the 25th. His companion went to a government facility in Manila when she manifested cough. The lady and the fatality were admitted and placed in isolation at San Lazaro Hospital on the same date.
Asked of his prognosis, he said he believes the outbreak can be controlled.
“There will be increase in numbers that is linked to increased testing on persons even with the mildest symptoms. There will be new cases in more locations as there are 130 suspected cases in 25 countries, including four countries with local transmission,” he explained.
“China, like the Philippines, is a valued member of the World Health Organization. We work closely with China. The cooperation between us and China is enhanced further with the global event centered in China,” Dr. Abeyasinghe said when asked of the level of cooperation between the international organization and China.
He said the Chinese are trying their best to better understand the virus and come up with appropriate control measures.
“With the evidence-based Chinese experience, we look forward to encouraging other countries to adopt,” Dr. Abeyasinghe concluded.
