Thousands in South Africa march against corruption

Thousands of South Africans on Wednesday took to the streets of major cities to protest against government corruption, state capture and job losses.

The march was organized by the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), which has more than one million members countrywide.

Many protesters were seen carrying placards demanding the resignation of President Jacob Zuma.

Zuma has been through a string of graft allegations in his reign, including the use of state money to renovate his personal home and letting the infamous Gupta family pull strings in his government.

Zuma is serving his last term as president, but only with two years to the end of his reign, he has faced numerous demands to quit this year.

Calls from the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) for him to resign, as well as failed motions of no confidence, were compounded by calls by some members of the ruling ANC party to have him quit.

COSATU earlier this year declared its support for vice president Cyril Ramaphosa’s bid to replace Zuma.

The union in September said it would march against allegations that private interests had captured the South African state.
