As Kenyans celebrate Christmas, the number of COVID-19 infections in the country rose by 282, according to the ministry of health.

The positive results were obtained from 4,095 tests conducted over the past 24 hours. The East African country has now conducted 1,029,748 cumulative COVID-19 tests and registered a total of 95,713 cases.

From the reported new cases, 240 were Kenyans while the remaining 42 were foreigners.

Over the same period, one patient lost their life, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related fatalities in Kenya to 1,653.

Ahead of Christmas, the ministry of health called upon Kenyans to remain vigilant to avoid spreading or contracting the virus.

Many Kenyans prefer to spend the festive period upcountry with extended families and friends, a trend that the ministry warned risked spreading the virus.

Some government-imposed measures remain in place to curb further spread of the virus, including a nationwide nighttime curfew and the mandatory wearing of face coverings while in public.

Kenya's caseload is the eighth-highest recorded in Africa, while its death toll is the seventh-highest.
