The Chinese mainland expects the Kuomintang (KMT) led by its new chairman, Chiang Chi-chen, to make efforts in maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, said a mainland spokesperson Saturday.

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks after Chiang Chi-chen was elected the KMT chairperson.

For years, the Communist Party of China and the KMT have strengthened mutual trust, promoted the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, and improved the interests and well-being of compatriots across the Strait on the common political foundation of upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence," said Zhu.

Noting that the current situation of cross-Strait relations is complex and grim, Zhu hoped that the KMT, under the leadership of Chiang, will cherish and maintain the existing political foundation between the two parties and play its role as a bridge in cross-Strait communication.
