At least 10 people were killed Monday afternoon when two helicopters crashed in midair in Argentina's northwest province of La Rioja, local media reported.

The crash took place 5 p.m. local time (2000 GMT) in a town known as Quebrada del Yeso, some 1,150 kilometers from the nation' s capital Buenos Aires, when a French television production company, identified as Praia Rosa, which is a "tourism service provider," was filming a documentary on survival.

Argentina's state news agency Telam reported "one of the helicopters belonged to the provincial government and the other to the organizers of an international survival competition show that was being filmed for the third year in a row in Villa Castelli and in which French citizens were traveling."

The tragedy happened as helicopters were flying over a hilly region of Villa Castelli.

Nearly all of the dead were French citizens, with the exception of one of the helicopter pilots, according to local daily El Independiente. Enditem
