A retired couple in Yuanqu, Shanxi province have become local celebrities after producing their own amateur webisodes in an effort to popularize law education.

The pair, Lu Fuhe and Zhang Runmian, began working on their webisodes in 2012 after both retired. Each webisode, featuring the local dialect and approachable plots, has been warmly welcomed by local viewers. Their first creation garnered over 2,000 views in just one day.

“Our webisodes have earned us many followers. Some overseas Chinese have left us messages saying that they watch our show when they're missing home. The local TV station has also aired our webisodes,” the couple told People’s Daily Online.

The webisodes, with their charming lack of polish, have not only attracted civilian fans, but also local authorities. Zhang Zezhong, former director of the local justice bureau, has encouraged the couple to keep popularizing law education through their webisodes.

“We used to pass out leaflets, as well as holding lectures to popularize law education. But those efforts were fruitless. Though it is important to educate the public, we need new methods to achieve this goal,” Zhang said.

According to Zhang, the local government has provided important support, even arranging for local writers and volunteers to brainstorm ideas for new scripts. Thanks to this support, webisodes have become a strong platform for popularization of the law, with 65 webisodes already made. The episodes cover more than 20 Chinese laws involving taxes and environmental protection.

“Every 10 days, a new script comes out. Based on the scripts, we create 30-minute webisodes. It’s quite time-consuming and we don’t even have time for a holiday to see our son in Beijing,” said Lu.
