Los Angeles landmarks were lit up blue at 8:00 pm Thursday night to show local residents' support for those on the front line in the fight against COVID-19.

City Hall, Staples Center, the Santa Monica pier Ferris wheel and Los Angeles International Airport, among other local locations in the second-largest city in the United states, took part in the effort initiated in the UK, as a tribute to workers not just in the health industry, but also in grocery stores and other essential businesses that remain open during the pandemic.

On Twitter, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti posted a picture of City Hall illuminated in blue, with the caption "Lighting up City Hall in support of health care workers and everyone fighting on the front lines of this crisis to save lives."

Chief of Los Angeles Police Department Michel Moore also applauded the effort on his official Twitter account, writing, "At 8 pm, all available units took a moment to #LightItBlue (and red) at local hospitals-Apologies for the noise-but let me assure you our hearts feel even stronger. A show of unity, respect appreciation for front line healthcare workers. From the bottom of our hearts: Thank you."

Video clips of the event posted online showed sounds of cheers echoing alongside flashing lights from the balconies of downtown buildings.

Organizers hope to make the event weekly, as it currently is in the UK.
