Authorities in Indian-controlled Kashmir have beefed up security apparatus and sounded caution Thursday, two days ahead of Indian Republic day.

The steps have been taken to thwart possible attempts by suspected militants to disrupt official celebrations, police said.

Policemen and paramilitary troopers of India's Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) deployed on the roads were seen checking vehicles, frisking pedestrians in Srinagar and Jammu- the twin capitals of Indian-controlled Kashmir. The policemen carrying metal detectors were seen checking vehicles for explosives. "Adequate security arrangements have been put in place across the region particularly in main towns and cities of Srinagar and Jammu to ensure peaceful celebrations," said a senior police official.

The security agencies have also cordoned the Bakhshi Stadium- the main venue for Jan. 26 function in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir. The multi-tier security system has been put in place with sharp shooters taking positions atop houses adjacent to the stadium to thwart any militant attack.

The paramilitary troopers have brought in sniffer dogs to carry out searches for explosives in and outside the stadium.

The roads leading to Bakhshi Stadium are under strict vigil. The barricades and concertina wires have been placed on the roads to restrict movement of people and vehicles.

The mobile bullet proof bunker vehicles were also parked in the middle of the road to sabotage any attack.

The security agencies have activated all the installed Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTVCs) in Srinagar to monitor the movement of people and keep an eye on untoward incidents.

The Republic Day in India marks the adoption of the constitution of India. Every year the day is celebrated by India on Jan 26. The main function is held in Indian capital New Delhi, where India's military, navy and air force display their skills and military might.

Likewise unprecedented security arrangements have been made in Jammu, the winter capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir. Police and paramilitary troopers have cordoned the Moulana Azad Memorial Stadium- the main venue for official function.

A guerrilla war aimed at putting an end to Indian rule is going on in the region between militants and Indian troops.

Meanwhile, separatist groups have called for a complete shutdown in the region on the eve of Jan. 26.
