Guo Zengxi, a policeman from Linzhou in Henan Province, is reported to have been drunk when he grabbed the baby from her parents, lifted her over his head and hurling her to the ground on July 20.

The couple were walking together after dinner with their seven-month-old daughter held in their arms.

The injured baby was immediately sent to hospital in Anyang and is no longer thought to be in a critical state.

SOUNDBITE (CHINESE) LI PENGQIANG, Neurosurgery Doctor:

"She's out of danger at present, but we can't say if there will be any sequela. We can't come to a conclusion now. We've asked the parents to take the baby back to hospital for check once a month."

The case has sparked an outcry on Chinese social media, and the policeman was confined 15 days by Linzhou public security bureau.

On Saturday, Anyang City, which governs Linzhou, set up an investigation team to look into the case.

Guo Fajie, head of the public security bureau of Anyang City, says the policeman involved in the baby attack has been put under criminal detention.

The incident came only weeks after a two-year-old Chinese girl died in similar circumstances.

The girl had been thrown onto the ground by a man following a row with her mother over parking.
