At least one attacker was killed after a car bomb blast and ensuing gunfire struck the Iraqi Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan on Monday, the Afghan Interior Ministry said.

"At around 11:10 a.m. (local time), four terrorists attacked the Iraqi Embassy in Ansari Square, Police District 4. In the beginning, one terrorist detonated his explosive at the first gate of the compound and three assailants entered the building," the ministry said in a statement.

According to local media, the Islamic State (IS) group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Members of Afghan Special Police Force, known as Crisis Response Unit (CRU), arrived at the site shortly after the attack and shifted the embassy staff to a secure place, the statement added.

"Efforts are underway to eliminate the remaining terrorists," the statement said.
