COLOMBO, Feb. 28 (APD) -- Sri Lanka has picked a Chinese company to maintain part of a coal power plant which was constructed by China, the Government said on Thursday.

The Government said that a Chinese company has been given the contract to maintain boilers and turbines at the third unit of the Lakvijaya coal power plant in Norocholai, Puttalam.

Cabinet has approved the proposal presented by Minister of Power, Energy and Business Development Ravi Karunanayaka to award the contract to China Machinery Engineering Corporation upon the recommendation of the cabinet appointed standing procurement committee.

China Machinery Engineering Corporation was in 2017 granted the contract to maintain the turbine and related accessories in unit two of the power plant.

The 900MW plant was built by China Machinery Engineering Corporation on a long term loan from the EXIM Bank of China.

Chinese companies are involved in several projects in Sri Lanka, including in constructing a power plant, port, airport, highways and high rise buildings.
