Disneyland Paris is reopening after a four-month closure with reinforced health and safety measures.

The move comes just days after the entertainment company's park in Hong Kong was closed again due to a new outbreak of coronavirus cases.

The park to the west of the French capital is now open to visitors after being shut on 17 March due to the spread of the coronavirus.

Disneyland is one of France's biggest visitor attractions, with two theme parks, 55 restaurants, the fifth-biggest hotel complex in the country and its own TGV high-speed train hub.

Face masks at the park will now be compulsory for visitors and employees, there is a reduced capacity at restaurants and a new online reservations system is in place to try to limit the number of people coming to the park each day.

"It will obviously be a little different because we are facing a different situation," said Daniel Delcourt, the senior vice-president of operations at Disneyland Paris.

"But most of the attractions will be back. Interactions with our characters will be back, too. They have been reinvented to fit with social distancing."

The park is hoping people will come for what it calls "Disney magic," but the company has been struggling.

It suffered a $1.4 billion hit to its profits in the first three months of the year.

Disney has added billions of dollars to its debt load, slashed executive salaries and furloughed more than 100,000 employees worldwide to try to offset the huge loss in income.

There have been protests by staff in the U.S., arguing that the company has not agreed to adequate protection for employees.

Unions say they fear the entertainment giant is rushing to get parks open again despite a continuing rise in the number of new coronavirus infections.

The reopening of Disney's Florida parks comes amid a recent surge in cases in the state.

Disney had planned to welcome guests to its resorts in California on 17 July but it has delayed the restart date indefinitely.

Company bosses are anxious that the Paris park avoids the issues that have affected other sites.

Disneyland in Hong Kong has had to close again due to new infections just a month after reopening following the lockdown.
