Uruguayan forward has agreed to sign for Montevideo side Penarol, confirmed club executive Edgar Welker on Wednesday.

"The contract with Diego Forlan is for a year and a half," said Welker on local radio station 1010 AM, as the club closed the negotiations that were started weeks before.

Both player and club had previously announced their willingness to come to an agreement but there had still been a few economic details and the question of the contract length to sort out.

Forlan was named the best player in the World Cup 2010 in South Africa. His new contract will bring him back to his place of birth from Cerezo Osaka in Japan.

He will join Penarol team either on Friday or Saturday.

The team are currently in their pre-season training at the seaside resort of Punta del Este (eastern Uruguay) with coach Pablo Bengoechea.

Forlan, 36, is slated to play his first match for the South American side in a friendly on July 18 with the opponent still to be confirmed according to Penarol sources.

"It is one of the biggest challenges in my life," said the player last month when he admitted he was close to signing with the Uruguayan side.

As runners-up in the 2014-2015 league, Penarol secured their place in the group phase of the Copa Libertadores 2016, a tournament which they have previously won five times.
