Australian authorities have got the need for speed after highway patrol officers receive a new Ford Mustang V8 pursuit vehicle, local media reported on Friday.

A photo of the car appeared in local social media overnight just hours after the U.S. two-door coupe had been released and despite not having its lights and sirens fitted, it is well on its way to frontline police work for the New South Wales police.

The Mustang is one of a number of vehicles under consideration by the NSW police force as they look to replace locally produced cars which are due to go out of production within the next two years.

The state's counterparts across the country are facing a similar situation and are taking a collective approach to find replacement vehicles, however NSW are considering cars outside the criteria because of unique requirements.

The Mustang won't replace all of the highway patrol vehicles, however a small number may be used for specialised duties.
