The United Nations Security Council on Thursday unanimously adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) until Nov. 15, 2020.

Abyei is a border town currently in the Abyei Area that is disputed by Sudan and South Sudan.

The Security Council first modified the UNISFA mandate in December 2011 to add tasks of supporting the Joint Border Verification and Monitoring Mechanism of Sudan and South Sudan, which gained independence from the former in July 2011.
