Maribor, Slovenia's second largest city, received 10,000 face masks from Hangzhou, its twin city in eastern China, according to the city's COVID-19 information website on Wednesday.
The masks, which arrived on Tuesday, will be distributed to the UKC Maribor hospital, the community health center, the city's two care homes, home nursing care service and taxi services.
Other Chinese cities, including Maribor's twin city Chongqing, partner cities Nanjing, Huai'an and Nanchang also pledged donations, which are due to arrive in the coming days, the website added.
"We are very happy about the great response by our partner cities, which have selflessly rushed to help us even though strict measures to contain the virus remain in force in China," Maribor authorities stated, adding that Mayor Sasa Arsenovic will thank his Chinese counterparts in a letter, according to the website.
Maribor is also benefiting from China's experience in battling COVID-19. It has received a COVID-19 Prevention and Treatment Manual from Hangzhou, and has been invited to be involved in the Global MediXchange for Combating COVID-19 (GMCC) program, established by the Jack Ma Foundation and Alibaba Foundation.
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Slovenia has reached 1,091 by Tuesday, death toll at 40. Maribor reported 85 infection cases.
