Donald Trump has warned that Iran will face "new and serious consequences" unless all unjustly imprisoned US citizens are released.

A White House statement said the US President and his administration were "redoubling efforts" to bring back all Americans unjustly detained abroad.

Mr Trump demanded Iran to return Robert Levinson, a US former law enforcement officer who disappeared more than 10 years ago, and Tehran businessman Siamak Namazi, 46, and his father, Baquer, 80.

Mr Levinson disappeared in Iran in 2007 and the US government has a $5m reward for information leading to his safe return.

An Iranian court sentenced Mr Namazi and his father, a former Iranian provincial governor and former UNICEF official, to 10 years in prison each on charges of spying and cooperating with the US.

The White House statement capped a week of rhetoric against Tehran.

On Tuesday, Washington imposed new economic sanctions on Iran over its ballistic missile programme and said Tehran's "malign activities" in the Middle East undercut any "positive contributions" coming from the 2015 nuclear accord.
