Back in March, the presidents of China and the US launched a "100-day plan" to open up trade. China promised to speed up the evaluation of eight varieties of GM crops from the US.

On Wednesday, China's Ministry of Agriculture announced an approval to import 16 varieties of GM crops include corn, soybeans, cotton, canola and beets.

According to a statement on its website, 14 of the approvals were renewals.

Two were new permits granted for Dow AgroSciences' Enlist corn and Monsanto's Vistive Gold soybeans. The approvals are valid for three years.
