At least one policeman was killed and two others wounded in explosion in Khan Abad district of northern Afghan province of Kunduz Tuesday morning, a local official said.

"The initial reports say that an improvised bomb was detonated through a remote control device at the district bazaar at about 10: 15 local time when a police vehicle was running through the area, causing the casualties," the district governor Hayatullah Amiri told Xinhua.

The official also said the wounded policemen who sustained severe injuries were shifted to a district hospital.

The police vehicle was also destroyed in the attack, he added.

Police are trying to keep people from gathering at the scene for fears that there might be a second blast.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

The Taliban, fighting an insurgency of more than one decade, has intensified attacks since late last month when they launched an annual rebel offensive against Afghan and about 100,000 NATO- led forces stationed in the country.

The Taliban also urged civilians to stay away from official gatherings, military convoys and centers regarded as the legitimate targets by militants besides warning people not to support the government and foreign troops.
